Experience the magic of swimming with humpback whales in the beautiful Cook Islands, surrounded by the turquoise waters of Aitutaki.
Each winter, humpback whales migrate through the warm waters of the South Pacific, passing the Cook Islands as part of their annual migration. Aitutaki offers us the opportunity to search for and respectfully swim with these incredible animals in a destination with far fewer whale-swim operators than some of the more heavily visited whale destinations in the South Pacific.
Our small group will spend six nights on Aitutaki, with five private whale-swim days reserved exclusively for our group. Keeping the group small gives us more flexibility on the water and allows everyone plenty of opportunity to experience and photograph the whales.
We have deliberately included a rest day in the middle of the expedition, giving you time to enjoy Aitutaki’s spectacular lagoon, relax on the beach or explore the island.
As with all wildlife expeditions, whale encounters are completely natural and cannot be guaranteed, but having five dedicated days on the water gives us multiple opportunities to search for humpback whales throughout our stay.

What to Expect
This is a small-group wildlife expedition, with our days built around finding and respectfully swimming with humpback whales.
We have reserved five private whale-swim days, giving us multiple opportunities throughout the week. Whale behaviour, weather and sea conditions will determine how each day unfolds, and our local guides will make decisions based on the welfare of the whales and conditions on the water.
When we’re not searching for whales, Aitutaki offers plenty of time to slow down and enjoy island life – turquoise lagoon waters, snorkelling, kayaking, beaches and relaxed South Pacific hospitality.
About Aitutaki
Located in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, Aitutaki is renowned for its extraordinary turquoise lagoon, palm-fringed islands and relaxed Polynesian atmosphere. During the austral winter, humpback whales migrate through Cook Islands waters as part of their annual journey through the South Pacific.
Aitutaki remains a relatively intimate destination for whale encounters, with far fewer whale-swim operators than some of the better-known whale destinations in the region, which is one of the reasons we have selected it for this expedition. Beyond the whales, Aitutaki’s lagoon provides opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and exploring the small islands scattered throughout its brilliant blue waters.

Travel with Purpose – Whale Conservation
Our whale expeditions are centred on respectful, meaningful encounters with humpback whales in their natural environment.
Throughout the expedition, we record whale behaviours, sightings, and, where possible, identifiable fluke photographs. Guest photographs may also contribute to Happywhale, helping researchers identify individual whales and better understand their movements and migration patterns.
With Amanda’s background in marine biology and wildlife ecology, guests also learn about humpback whale behaviour, migration, conservation, and responsible approaches to swimming with wild whales.
